Often I hear people say "Americans are to asleep to make any real change". or "they're to brainwashed or stupid" to organize, that they are to lazy.....to go out on the streets and demand change.
So let me ask, is this a constructive way to address today's issues? Should we just accept this as fact?
We should educate the masses. It will not be easy, nor will it happen quickly. It takes everyday talking to and leading by the hand, people to knowledge. And it must be done with the faith that it can be done. Its not that I disagree with the fact that Americans seem complacent, apathetic, ignorant, and even lazy, it is that I disagree with it being said. Because when we approach the problem with a negative attitude who would want to join? Who would want to be apart of organizing around such negativity. Keep it positive move it forward, don't say it can't be done. You know, just before occupy kicked off, about 6 months before, people were saying "oh there will never be mass protests in our streets, it'll never happen, Americans are too asleep!", but it did happened! And it happened because a few people said "it can happen, it will happen! Let's do it!" Not "we are not ready, we need to be more organized, the people are asleep",... The attitude that says people are just too lazy, or two stupid, or two ignorant, or just don't care enough, ends the debate about whether or not it can be done, because no one wants to participate with those who feel so negative. And I say this to you all with great love, and hope that you begin to embrace the idea that believing it can't be done, or can't be done right now, causes it not to be done. If you think about it, with the odds stacked against humanity as much as they are, it takes a lot more than intelligence or organizing to accomplish anything. It takes an unwavering faith, which Martin Luther King Jr talk about often, that things can and will be done. That is why I always chastise those who say the people aren't ready or the people are not smart enough or we are not organized enough et cetera. Because until we believe we can, we never will.
